Swing with Ease

The normal tendency when playing into a strong head wind is to swing harder. It would seem that one must use force to compensate for the loss of distance due to the headwind. However, the harder you swing, the more spin the ball is going to have. The wind exaggerates spin; a backspin will cause the ball to balloon, draws grow into hooks and fades become slices. What then should you do?

Swinging easier, use less force. Take plenty of club, sometimes 2 to 3 clubs more in extreme wind, one club for every 10 miles per hour of wind. A relaxed swing reduces spin because the club head isn't going as fast at impact, less spin decreases the effects of the wind on your shot. Your selection of a larger club compensates for the loss of distance due to the headwind. Good luck and remember to have fun.
